Goals of Summer Study Abroad Programs
Summer Study Abroad programs are an integral part of the University’s international mission. Arts and Science aims to ensure that each undergraduate student is able to participate in a study abroad experience. Summer study abroad is becoming increasingly important for students who need to complete certain CAS degree requirements.
Study abroad offerings should advance the overall educational goals and should produce incremental resources for Arts and Science. Study abroad programs require more extensive planning and additional administrative responsibility on the part of the program or department. We are particularly interested in initiatives that will expand enrollments. The decision to move forward on a new study abroad program is based on how it contributes to these goals.
Arts and Science currently runs twelve four to six week programs abroad during the summer months. For more information on these programs, please see: http://www.nyu.edu/summer/2009/abroad/programs-cas.html
Proposing New Study Abroad Programs: Policies and Procedures
The New Program Proposal
If your department wishes to propose a new study abroad program, this plan should be articulated in the APR and then a detailed program proposal must be submitted with the APR submission. Proposals for new summer study abroad programs are due with the APR one year in advance of the start date of the proposed program.
The new program proposal must demonstrate how the proposed curriculum fits into overall academic program goals, as well as supply evidence that there is enough demand for such a program to assure a minimum number of 20 students. The proposal should provide a rationale for conducting the course(s) overseas by explaining the significance of the location(s) to the overall educational experience. The proposal should provide a clear picture of the careful integration of course content and on-site living and learning opportunities.
The proposal must also include a budget projection which demonstrates that the program will contribute to the revenue base. Sustainability of the program also includes a stable directorship for several years forward, with the department taking responsibility for the continuity of staffing and running of the program.
Faculty members interested in proposing a new NYU faculty-led study abroad program will need to submit:
- a completed new program proposal form (signed by the faculty member and the department chair)
- a narrative of no longer than five pages which addresses the points listed in the narrative instructions
- a budget for the program (please use the appropriate budget format and feel free to contact the Arts and Science Office of Summer and Study Abroad for assistance in developing the budget).
- If the proposed program includes a new course, the form called Required Documentation for Proposals for All New Courses for review by the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee must also be submitted. The new course must be approved by the academic department before being submitted to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee for review.
