Welcome to Arts and Science.

At A&S, our overriding ambition is to build a great teaching and research institution by attracting leading scholars and students from around the world.

We are well on our way to achieving our goal. In 1993, a survey by the National Research Council ranked nine of our Arts and Science programs - Art History, Comparative Literature, English, Music, Computer Science, Mathematics, Anthropology, Economics, and French - in the top 20 in terms of faculty quality. A number of additional departments are poised to move into the top tier when the next survey is completed.

Driving this success is our faculty. Our single highest priority in Arts and Science is the recruitment of faculty of enormous intellectual strength and visibility in their fields. Because of their excellence, we also attract outstanding graduate and undergraduate students.

Between 1989 and 2004 at the College of Arts and Science,

  • applications rose 300%.
  • due to increased selectivity, the percentage of applicants that were accepted to CAS declined from 70.4% to 25.7%.
  • the number of incoming freshman who are National Merit Scholars more than tripled.
  • the average SAT scores of incoming students increased by over 150 points.

At the Graduate School of Arts and Science,

  • between 1989-2004, applications to GSAS increased over 130%.
  • for Fall 2004, GSAS received approximately 6,000 applications for acceptance into one of the their Ph.D. programs and only 645 were accepted.
  • over the last three years, 26 of GSAS students have studied abroad as Fulbright Fellows; 13 have received Andrew Mellon fellowships; 9, support from the National Institutes of Health; and 11, awards from the Ford Foundation, including minority fellowships.

At A&S, our passion for combining great teaching and great research is helping us build one of the great Arts and Science units in the world.

Sincerely,

Richard Foley
