Dear Colleague,

In Fall, 2000, the FAS Policy and Planning Advisory Committee charged a sub-committee comprised of representatives from P&P and the Women's Faculty Caucus to examine the issue of gender equity for Arts & Science faculty. The members of that sub-committee did an enormous amount of work on this important issue. In addition to piloting a study by an external consultant, the work of this sub-committee resulted in the development of a faculty database that allows FAS to track recruitment activities, merit rankings, and other factors affecting gender equity in the future.

After the initial report was submitted in 2002, the Policy and Planning Advisory Committee recommended that every two or three years a new study be mounted to look at gender equity issues. At the beginning of academic year 2005/06, a new sub-committee was formed to oversee this study. The membership of the subcommittee was as follows:

Carol Shoshkes Reiss, Biology, Chair
Raquel Fernandez, Economics
Marilyn Heilman, Psychology
Emily Martin, Anthropology
John Rinzel, Neural Science
Srinivasa Varadhan, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences
Joe Juliano, Dean of Administration (Ex-Officio)
Randall Say, Associate Dean of Fiscal & Administrative Affairs (Ex-Officio)
David Vintinner, Institutional Research Analyst (Ex-Officio)
Jason Presley, Institutional Research Analyst (Ex-Officio)

The 2006 gender equity study includes both updated analyses of 2002 data and analyses based on the most recent salary data. The 2006 gender equity study shows that we continue to have much to be proud of within FAS, and everyone who has been involved with gender equity issues over the years, from department chairs to the deans to the Women's Faculty Caucus, is to be congratulated for their efforts. At the same time, the recent study also surfaced several issues that need deeper analysis and study, which the P&P Committee and the FAS Dean's office will conduct.

I extend my gratitude to the sub-committee who addressed a complex issue with great rigor.

Dean Richard Foley
