FAS/CIT Standard Workstation Recommendations

The following are the current FAS/CIT recommended configurations for workstations.  The machine configurations are based on the NYU standards for computers.  Last Updated 10/04/2012. 

Replacement/New machines may be chosen from the Standard PC Workstation, Standard PC Laptop, Standard Mac Workstation, or Standard Mac Laptop. Any upgrades beyond the standard configurations must be paid with departmental or research funds.

Standard PC Workstation - All-in-One Option

This workstation is intended for the PC user. It has the computer built into the back of the monitor, like an Apple iMac, and takes a smaller amount of desk space.

  • Dell Optiplex 9010 AIO with camera, 3rd Gen Intel Core i5 3570S Processor 3.1GHz, 6M Cache, Integrated Gigabit NIC, Intel integrated Graphics VGA/HDMI and Integrated Sound.
  • 4GB 1600MHz RAM, 250GB SATA Hard Drive, No Speakers, No Floppy Drive, 8X DVD+/-RW.
  • 23" Widescreen WLED Display.
  • Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
  • 4 year warranty
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Professional installed separately by FAS/CIT support providers, as appropriate under license agreement (Select licensing allows installation on one desktop and one laptop per individual).
  • Wired mouse and keyboard.

Standard PC Workstation - Mini-tower Option

This workstation is intended for the PC user. It uses a traditional tower with separate monitor.

  • Dell Optiplex 3010 Mini-Tower, 3rd Gen Intel Core i3 3220 Processor 3.3GHz, 3M Cache, Integrated Gigabit NIC, Intel integrated Graphics VGA/HDMI and Integrated Sound.
  • 4GB 1600MHz RAM, 250GB SATA Hard Drive, Internal Speakers, No Floppy Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW.
  • 23" Widescreen WLED Display.
  • Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
  • 4 year warranty

PC Laptop

This workstation is intended for typical laptop users.

  • Dell Latitude E6430 with Core i5-3320M Processor 2.6GHz.
  • 4GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, 8X DVD+/-RW.
  • Built-in camera and microphone.
  • No Modem, Integrated Network Card, and Wireless 802.11n card.
  • 14.0" HD Anti-Glare LED-backlit Display.
  • Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Professional installed separately by FAS/CIT support providers, as appropriate under license agreement (Select licensing allows installation on one desktop and one laptop per individual).

Standard Apple Workstation

This workstation is intended for the Macintosh user.

  • iMac with Intel Quad-Core i5 2.5GHz processor, Built-in Facetime camera, sound and Gigabit NIC.
  • 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, Superdrive DVD+/-R DL/DVD+/-RW/CD-RW, ATI Radeon HD 6750 (512MB of GDDR3 memory) video card.
  • 21.5" Display, Airport Extreme 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.
  • 1 Thunderbolt port, 1 FireWire 800 port, 4 USB 2.0 ports, SD card slot, Mini DisplayPort output.
  • Wired keyboard, Wired Mouse.
  • MacOS 10.9, AppleCare three-year protection plan.
  • Microsoft Office 2011 Professional installed separately by FAS/CIT support providers, as appropriate under license agreement (Select licensing allows installation on one dekstop and one laptop per individual).

Apple Laptop – MacBook Pro 13"

  • Apple MacBook Dual-Core i5 2.5GHz processor.
  • 4GB 1333MHz RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, 8X DVD+/-RW, Intel HD 4000 graphics.
  • 13.3" LED-backlit glossy widescreen Display, no modem, Airport Extreme, Bluetooth.
  • 1 Thunderbolt, 1 Firewire 800, 2 USB ports,
  • MacOS 10.9, AppleCare three-year protection plan.
  • Microsoft Office 2011 Professional installed separately by FAS/CIT support providers, as appropriate under license agreement (Select licensing allows installation on two computers per individual).

Faculty and staff printers are replaced on an as-needed basis, with a new one provided for new faculty.  An upgrade to the printer is available if department or research funds are used to pay for the difference.  The standard printer configuration is given below:

  • 6' USB Cable.
