Title: Austronesian voice morphology and the structure of causatives
Abstract: In this talk, I present a general approach to Austronesian voice morphology based on the interaction between the lexical features of Voice ([+D], [-D] and unspecified) (Kastner 2016, 2017; Oseki 2017) and nominal features within the vP. I then apply this approach to account for productive causatives in Austronesian, which I propose involves Voice over Voice. I show that taking the causative morpheme and Austronesian voice marking system to be variants of Voice captures several cross-linguistic generalisations, including the uniform behaviour of causatives of intransitives and the optionality of some transitive causees (Kayne 1975).
