FAQs for an M.A. in IR with a Concentration in International Politics/Business

Is the International Politics/Business concentration a joint degree?
No. The International Politics/Business concentration is not a joint degree. Upon completion of this concentration students earn a Master's Degree in International Relations.

Will I be considered a student of both the Graduate School of Arts and Science and the Leonard N. Stern Business School?
No. Although you are taking courses at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, you are student of the Graduate School of Arts and Science only. 

Can this program be done on a part-time basis?
Only domestic students can complete the program on a part-time basis. Part-time students must complete the degree requirements within 5 years. International students must maintain full-time status while attending NYU. 

What courses can I take at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business?
Students can select any class that is open to “non-Stern” students provided the course is relevant to their field of study or interests and they meet the course prerequisites.

How many credits must students take in the Program of International Relations and at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business? 
Students in the concentration are required to complete 21 credits in the Program of International Relations and 15 credits at Stern.

Is there a limit to the number of credits students can take at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business each semester? 
Student are limited to 6 credits per semester at Stern.

How many credits are Stern courses?
Credits for Stern courses vary between one and three credits. However, most students in this concentration take three-credit courses.

What is the typical amount of time it takes to complete the International Politics/Business concentration? 
Due to Stern's credit limitations (see above), the minimum time to complete this concentration is one and a half years.

Can I transfer credits from another institution?
Students can transfer up to 9 credits towards either their international relations or business course requirements. Transfer credit requests must be for graduate courses that have not been counted towards another degree. All transfer credit requests must be approved by both the IR Program Director and the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Science.

How much is tuition?
Tuition for all courses follows the rate and fees schedule for the Graduate School of Arts and Science.
