Each year, the Institute of French Studies welcomes a small number of visiting scholars who come to New York to engage in research and writing related to the study of France and the francophone world. They may affiliate with the Institute for either one or two semesters during the academic year and are expected to participate in some scholarly workshops and colloquia at the Institute during their stay. The Institute does not have a visiting scholars program during the summer.
Visiting scholars may hold academic appointments elsewhere or have no academic appointment. Younger scholars who have completed a Ph.D. but have not yet found an academic appointment are also encouraged to apply. Please note that NYU requires visiting scholars to have a Ph.D.
For an appointment as a visiting scholar at IFS for the fall or spring semester or for consecutive fall and spring semesters, application materials are due by April 15 for the following academic year.
