History of the Byzantine Empire I, 4th-9th Centuries

A survey of Byzantine history from the foundation of Constantinople in 330 to the end of the Iconoclastic controversy in 843. It traces the transformation of the Eastern Roman Empire into Medieval Byzantium examining the major political, social, economic, and cultural developments. It focuses on topics such as the spread of Christianity, heresy, the rise of Islam, the collapse of Late Antique urban culture and the passing into the Middle Ages, as well as the role of Byzantium as a major power in Europe and the Near East.
