Approaches to Historical Research & Writing II

This seminar is intended for PhD students to complete the History Department’s first-year requirement to write a research paper. The syllabus is designed around a progression of assignments that will culminate in a 7000-10,000-word (25-40-page) paper, based on original research, that strives to make a significant contribution to the historical literature. The length is derived from submission guidelines of major scholarly journals, and the aim is to craft a wellargued, well-written essay that can stand as a draft of an article or dissertation chapter. In tandem with the course requirements, students will consult with their advisors about primary and secondary sources specific to their fields and projects.
