This course explores the history of France and its empire from the late nineteenth century through decolonization in the 1950s and on to the postcolonial era of the present. Readings focus especially on the impact of the world wars and colonial conflicts on the politics of gender, class, religion, and race. The course concludes with attention to the rebellion of May 1968, postcolonial immigration, the rise of the anti-immigrant National Front, the French role in the construction of the European Union, and the historical roots of divisions besetting France today.
