Advanced Modern Greek II

PREREQUISITE: ADVANCED MODERN GREEK I OR PERMISSION OF THE INSTRUCTOR.

PERMISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT REQUIRED. The main objective of this course is to help students develop a comprehensive vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, and increase their effectiveness, accuracy and fluency in writing and speaking the language through a direct immersion in the historical and contemporary facets and expressions of Greek life. Through a selection of scholalry essays, newspaper articles, films, blogs and online discussions we will explore the historical relationship between Greece and Europe, challenge the interplay between ‘classicism’ and ‘orientalism,’ unravel some of the meanings of civilization, study the ways in which culture informs politics, and raise questions about the future of Greece within the European and world community.
