EN MARGE DU POSSIBLE (conducted in FRENCH) A study of 19th and 20th-century narratives teasing the margins of possibilities, from the spiritualistic to the pseudo-scientific, from the diabolical to the satirical, from the nightmarish to the humoristic. The course requires weekly “reader responses” and active participation in class discussions (25% of the grade), several oral presentations (25%), two short papers, one analytical, one creative (40%), and a final exam (10%). Authors and works to be covered include: Charles Nodier, La Fée aux miettes; Théophile Gautier, La Morte amoureuse; Prosper Mérimée, La Vénus d’Ille; Marcel Schwob, Le Roi au masque d’or; Boris Vian, L’Ecume des jours; André Pieyre de Mandiargues, L’Archéologue; Claude Seignolle, Les Chevaux de la nuit; René Barjavel, Ravage; Didier van Cauwelaert, La Nuit dernière au XVe siècle
