In 2002, the estate of Julius Silver provided NYU with a spectacular gift, which not only strengthens the University as a whole, and Arts and Science in particular, but also recognizes the outstanding scholars who have made NYU one of the greatest research and teaching universities in the country. That recognition comes in the form of named chairs, known as the Julius Silver, Roslyn S. Silver, and Enid Silver Winslow Professorships. A provision of the generous gift was to put together a collection of papers written by the distinguished scholars designated as the Julius Silver, Roslyn S. Silver, and Enid Silver Winslow Professors. The papers, which are available through links on this website, focus on important issues in the scholars’ fields, with an emphasis on the questions and concerns they think will inform the most challenging and the most relevant issues facing us in the coming years.
As Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, I am delighted to present the Silver Dialogues, and I hope that you find the collective work of our Silver Professors to be of interest. We believe that they are shining examples of the remarkable depth and range of the research and scholarship of our extraordinary faculty.
