Paul Strohm, Visiting Professor for fall 2017, is Garbedian Professor of the Humanities Emeritus at Columbia University; before that, he was J.R.R. Tolkien Professor of  Language and Literature at the University of Oxford.  He specializes in later medieval English literature, with an emphasis on intersections of literature and history.  He has published numerous books in his field, beginning with Social Chaucer (Harvard, 1989) and, most recently, a micro-biography entitled Chaucer’s Tale (Viking-Penguin, 2015).
