What projects are you working on now?
I am currently working on a book manuscript on post-1949 Shanghai Studies, a book chapter on standup comedy and humor, as well as a journal on comparative urban studies in Asia. I am Assistant Professor of China Studies at The New School, and Faculty Advisor of India China Institute.
What recommendations would you give a graduate student at NYU and one focusing in East Asian Studies?
Find your passion with your research and be a critical thinker. Reflect on the greatness as well as limitations of Area Studies in the U.S.
Why did you choose EAS and NYU for your graduate work?
Because of the faculty, research, resource, and the city of New York.
Looking back, what were some of your favorite things about studying at NYU and about the EAS?
Graduate seminars, workshops, guest speakers, reading groups, and conferences.
What was your favorite class and/or which faculty at NYU had the greatest impact in your studies?
Courses on Marxism, capitalism, comparative area studies, literature and film studies.
