Moderniz, Modernism & Nat Cult in Mod Japan

This course examines discourses of modernization, modernism, and national culture in modern Japan through studies in film, literature, philosophy, and the social sciences. We will discuss the “I novel,” naturalism, subjectivity, Kyoto School philosophy, Japanese Marxist debates on capitalism, total war mobilization, the so-called “comfort woman system,” and topics relating to postcolonial Japanese studies. Authors that we will read include, but are not limited to, Abe Kobo, John Okada, Karatani Kojin, Natsume Soseki, Naoki Sakai, Medoruma Shun, Takeuchi Yoshimi, Tanabe Hajime, Tosaka Jun, and Ueno Chizuko.
