As part of the CALA Spring 2018 Film Series “From the Other Side: Foreign War Films,” the NYU Center for Applied Liberal Arts and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a screening of the 2014 German film Phoenix, directed by Christian Petzold, starring Nina Hoss and Ronald Zehrfeld. The screenplay is a loose adaptation of the 1961 novel Le Retour des Cendres (The Return from the Ashes) by Hubert Monteilhet. The film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Frederic Richter, Director of Development at Tradition Pictures and instructor at the NYU School of Professional Studies, will introduce the film.
About the Series:
Traditionally, war films tell only one side of the story—usually that of the victor. In the United States, where films from Hollywood dominate the box office and cultural conversations, the American point of view, both politically and socially, is most likely to be represented. All wars, however, share one commonality: the human experience. In this film series, explore movies about wars, both familiar and not, that provide new and alternate perspectives but are still united by the quest to illuminate the horror and heartbreak universal to the human experience of war.
With RSVP, this event is free of charge. If you would like to attend, please register here. As space at Deutsches Haus is limited, please arrive ten minutes prior to the event. Thank you.
