The Medieval and Renaissance Graduate Interdisciplinary Network (or MARGIN) is a student group affiliated with NYU’s Medieval and Renaissance Center and is not restricted to those pursuing MARC’s concentration on Medieval and Renaissance Studies. We welcome all graduate students in any department at NYU with an interest in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, or both. Our members are excited to work collaboratively with students of different disciplinary and period focuses, in an accessible and social setting.
MARGIN members believe that our own scholarship is made stronger when combined with the perspectives and skills of others. We affirm the necessity for scholars to come together and recognize the needs of the field in broad, inclusive terms. The group is committed to creating a diverse and supportive academic community, as we believe these practices advance scholarship. Therefore, MARGIN strives to foster an environment that pushes traditional boundaries of fields and disciplines, while recognizing the unique contributions that each can bring.
To those ends, MARGIN aims to be an open forum for new ideas and new approaches, where scholarly dialogue can build a supportive, welcoming community. We hope that conversations between a diversity of fields and diversity of people will produce fruitful collaborations and, ultimately, new research that is rigorous, transdisciplinary, and experimental.
“Exactly because we recognize pars for pars, we can have greater confidence—and greater pleasure—in a kaleidoscopic whole that is far larger than the limited vision of any one of us.”
