Deutsches Haus at NYU and the NYU German Department present the talk “obvious and enigmatic… also flowing backward": Reconsidering the Neue Sachlichkeit by Sabine Kriebel, Lecturer for Modern and Contemporary Art at the University College Cork.
Cold, detached, objectifying, alienated, cynical, retrograde. These are among the terms often associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit, that broadly realist tendency in both painting and photography in the Weimar Republic variously translated as The New Objectivity or The New Sobriety. This talk aims to rethink some of those assessments, ossified through nearly a century of repetition, by returning to the particularity of painting and critical moments of uncertainty. Rather than revisit the terrain of isolation and ‘thingness’, I consider aspects of relationality, dwelling on moments of introjection, identification, and analogy, reflecting on psychic reality in conditions of industrial capitalism that still hold us in their thrall.
Sabine Kriebel is a scholar of modern German art and photography at University College Cork. Her publications range from Dada to photographic doubt. Following her book Revolutionary Beauty: The Radical Photomontages of John Heartfield (University of California Press, 2014), her next project investigates the desire for holism in the technological age.
