Migrant Divas: From Streisand to Beyonce
This course will analyze the function of divas as both cultural icons for immigrant communities and historical touchstones for understanding the complexities of U.S. immigration history. What were the cultural worlds of immigrants to the U.S. during the twentieth century? How did they negotiate their migrations and new lives through popular culture? Our class will not only consider traditionally acknowledged “divas” or female performers but will use the concept of diva to question the intersections of performance, gender, race, and national belonging that immigrants have experienced and invoked throughout the twentieth century.
