What is the Atlantic World? How did it shape the lives of the Indians, Africans, and Europeans who met, often violently, in that space? How did it shape the colonial worlds it engendered? How were people, trade, labor, empires, and politics defined and redefined in the Atlantic? Is the Atlantic limited to the four continents connected by that ocean? To what extent does the Atlantic World interact with other spaces, for example in the Pacific and Indian Oceans? This course will consider these questions (and many others) by looking at some of the most recent (and exciting) literature in the field.
