This course is intended as a writing and methodology workshop for students engaged in writing an honors thesis. The honors thesis is a paper of 50-80 pages based on research in primary and secondary sources, and resulting in original analysis of primary sources in the context of relevant historiography. The seminar seeks to foster a rigorous intellectual environment where students will learn how to devise a research project that is intellectually sound and practically feasible. Special attention will be given to conceptual structure, especially the task of creating a framework for sustaining an overarching argument across the length of the honors thesis. In conjunction with ongoing writing assignments targeted towards the specific research goals of students, we will read works of broad theoretical and methodological interest. During the course of the semester, students are expected to define a thesis topic, arrange for a faculty advisor, develop a bibliography, read broadly in secondary sources and begin research in primary sources. By the end of the term, a substantial part of the research, along with an organizational outline of the thesis, and a draft of one section of the thesis should be completed. Students will present this to the class at the end of the semester. In the spring semester of 2018, students will finish the writing of their thesis. You will both work with your adviser and meet regularly with me. The completed thesis must be defended before a committee consisting of the advisor and at least one other faculty member at NYU. The committee will recommend a grade of Honors, High Honors, Highest Honors, Pass or Fail. The defense must be scheduled before the last week of the spring semester.
