Who is eligible to receive a FLAS fellowship?
FLAS awards are open to undergraduate (for summer fellowships only) and graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents and who are enrolled or are accepted for enrollment in a program that combines foreign language training with international or area studies or with the international aspects of professional or other fields.
What languages are eligible for FLAS study?
At CLACS academic year fellowships are available for the study of Quechua and Brazilian Portuguese. Summer fellowships are open to Quechua, Brazilian Portuguese, Haitian Kreyol, Mixtec, Nahuatl, and other Amerindian languages.
Can FLAS support the study of Spanish?
Usually not. Annual FLAS is not granted for the study of Spanish. In rare cases, summer FLAS may be granted to a doctoral student studying Spanish at the advanced level, if such study is critical to completion of research.
Must I demonstrate financial need to be eligible for AY FLAS?
No. All applicants will be considered for AY FLAS, but if you have financial need and complete the FAFSA by the application deadline, you will considered under this priority.
Can I apply to both summer and academic year FLAS fellowships?
Yes. It is possible to receive both a summer and AY award in the same year. These are separate competitions, and you must apply separately and completely for each fellowship. That is, no part of the application can double for both applications; each application packet must be complete.
Can I apply for both a CLACS Summer Field Research Grant and a FLAS summer fellowship?
Yes, but you will not be awarded both, and you may be asked to rank the two applications in advance. As you write your FLAS proposal, bear in mind that FLAS is not a field research grant: you are expected to devote your full time to language study and the fellowship is not for substantive dissertation or field research.
Is there a limit to the number of FLAS fellowships that I can receive?

Can I get a single semester award during the academic year?
Can I take a semester off and finish the award during a subsequent period, or delay acceptance of the FLAS Fellowship for the academic year or summer?
No. FLAS Fellowships must be completed during the year for which they are awarded.
Can I use the FLAS fellowship at another U.S. institution?
Fellows can use the FLAS fellowship at other U.S. institutions only during the summer.
Can I use the FLAS fellowship overseas?
Yes, during the summer, if you are at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency, or at the beginning level when an appropriate language program is not available in the U.S.
