Sponsored Awards

The Eugene Bell Award: Awarded to a doctoral student who passed their thesis proposal exam with distinction. Established by the Eugene and Millicent Bell Foundation.

The Steve Kazianis Memorial Award: Awarded to a doctoral student who presented or published the best research (greatest potential to have significant impact in the field) during the academic year. In addition the award honors a student who has made a significant contribution to the life of the graduate student body. Established in memory of former graduate student, Steve Kazianis. The Steve Kazianis memorial fund also provides for an alumni speaker at the annual Graduate Student Retreat. This fund was established and is maintained through the very generous support of Jacob Cohen.

The Gladys Mateyko Research Award: Award to a senior doctoral student who has demonstrated excellence in research, academic achievement, involvement and participation in departmental affairs and cooperation with fellow workers. Criteria for this award include performance on the Qualifying Exam, the Thesis Proposal, research publications, and presentations at professional meetings. Established in memory of former faculty member, Gladys Mateyko.

The Charlotte A. Pann Memorial Research Award: Awarded to a senior doctoral student who has demonstrated outstanding research accomplishments and potential. Criteria for this award include performance on the Qualifying Exam, the Thesis Proposal, research publications, and presentations at professional meetings. Established in memory of Charlotte Pann.

The Chair's Award (3): Awarded to up to three doctoral students per year who passed their qualifying exam with distinction.

Departmental Fellowships

Fleur Strand Graduate Fellowship: Awarded to a fourth year doctoral student who shows the most promise in becoming a leader in biomedical research. Established in memory of former faculty member and Chair, Fleur Strand through the generous support of Curt Strand.

Developmental Genetics Training Grant: Awarded to doctoral students studying in the Developmental Genetics PhD track.

Teaching Awards

The Kopac Teaching Award I:  Awarded to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence as a teaching assistant in the introductory laboratory course that accompanies Principles of Biology. The Kopac awards were established in memory of Milan Kopac, former faculty member and Chair. These awards were funded through the generous donation of Dr. Ida Heller and her husband Marvin Heller.

The Kopac Teaching Award II: Awarded to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence as a teaching assistant or coordinator in the laboratories or recitation sections that accompany other courses. The Kopac awards were established in memory of Milan Kopac, former faculty member and Chair. These awards were funded through the generous donation of Dr. Ida Heller and her husband Marvin Heller.

Other Awards

The Kopac Service Award: Awarded to a doctoral student, by their fellow students, who has made an outstanding contribution to the Biology department and academic environment. The Kopac awards were established in memory of Milan Kopac, former faculty member and Chair. These awards were funded through the generous donation of Dr. Ida Heller and her husband Marvin Heller.

The Annual Graduate Student Retreat Poster awards: Awarded for outstanding poster presentations during the retreat.
